Gorkana is asking everyone in the comms industry to nominate someone who embodies exceptional integrity and determination as the 2016 Suzy Ferguson Spirit Award launches.

Suzy Ferguson Spirit Award enters its third year to find the unsung heroes of the comms industry

Now in its third year, The Suzy Ferguson Spirit Award was launched by Gorkana in partnership with Suzy Ferguson’s former employer, LEWIS PR, in memory of one of the industry’s brightest young stars, who passed away from bowel cancer on 26 July 2012, aged 31.

An inspirational person, whose work had a positive impact on clients and fellow professionals, Suzy worked tirelessly in the community outside her work, even after she was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Her spirit and talent positively influenced every organisation she worked with.

In a world where ethical values are often overlooked in favour of financial targets, the award is designed to reward the unsung heroes of the comms world – individuals of exceptional character, integrity and determination.

It was these traits that the judging panel saw in Nicola Green, director of comms and reputation at O2, who was the unanimous choice to win the 2015 Suzy Ferguson Spirit Award earlier this year.

Sally O'Neill, spokesperson for the judging panel for the 2015 award, said of Nicola: "From her work on the ‘Think Big’ programme at O2 to nurture the next generation, to her external mentoring and PR for the local community during a maternity break, this giving back attitude, while expecting nothing in return, impressed us. She clearly empowers whoever she comes into contact with and has earned trust and loyalty in return.

“As we embark on the third year of the award, we're again looking for someone who displays exceptional character, integrity and determination. If you know someone who embodies Suzy, then please nominate.”

Jeremy Thompson, MD, Cision EMEA, and one of the judges for the awards, added: “I feel privileged to be associated with the Suzy Ferguson Award because, in an industry full of awards, this one is different; it recognises individuals who are good at their job but are also inspirational outside of the workplace.

“We think it’s important to recognise the values that Suzy held so important in her life and work, which is why we want to hear from anyone in the industry who knows someone worthy of winning the 2016 Suzy Ferguson Spirit Award.”

The award supports Bowel Cancer UK as its official charity. It aims to save lives and improve the quality of life for all those affected by bowel cancer and its work is essential as early diagnosis is a key challenge in survival.
